Cathy Thompson already had extensive experience working with children when she applied to work as a counselor on the Youth Villages Dogwood residential treatment campus. Working with teens with serious behavior problems was new to her. "Here I am more than two years later and still loving it," she says.
Cathy begins her days checking voice mail and e-mail. During a typical day, she holds individual therapy sessions and attends all the meetings she can that concern her group of kids: treatment team, consultation and family sessions. But she also fulfills many additional duties, such as writing reports requested by a provider or agency Youth Villages partners with or helping admit a new child to the program.
Cathy says she appreciates the support she has received from her superiors: "My supervisors have been excellent in that they inspire me, give praise and constructive feedback, motivating me to do better. They also are a wealth of clinical knowledge and have helped me ease into this position very nicely."
As a seasoned counselor, Cathy enjoys helping new counselors settle into their often challenging jobs. She also enjoys the trainings and conferences she attends and appreciates that Youth Villages pays for these so she may continue to grow in her field. Cathy says she likes best that Youth Villages gives her the autonomy she needs to do her job well.
"I recommend Youth Villages because the career and experience opportunities are unmatched, and it's a great way to sharpen your professional skills. It can be tough working with teenagers who do not necessarily want help or to be here, but it can make you all the better as a counselor."
